Invitation Letter

28/6/2019

The University of Exeter would like to invite you to take part in an intensive one-week long summer course in Data Science to help test the content and teaching approaches used. This brand new course aims to provide students with an overview of data science as an emerging field that is likely to have great impacts on many aspects of our daily lives in the years to come.

The course is open to teenagers who are nearing the end of their secondary education and have an interest in data science in general and developing analytical skills with R in particular. While the course does not assume prior background in mathematics or statistics, we aim to teach a set of skills and principles that are often considered fundamental to the field.

Ideally, you should be able to travel to Exeter each day, from August 27th to September 3rd so that you can come and join the sessions with us at the University for three hours each day. However, students who are unable to join us on campus can also take the course via live web conferences, which will be recorded and made available on this website afterwards.

At the end of the course, there will be a one-day event (date to be confirmed soon) on the beautiful Streatham campus of the University, when we will invite real world data scientists and academics to come and talk to students and ask the students to demonstrate what they have learnt.

More details about the course are available here.

As a thank you for your time and feedback, we will give students a £15 Amazon voucher for each day they attend.

Please get in touch with Dr ZhiMin Xiao (z.m.xiao@exeter.ac.uk) to apply for a place on this course. We aim to make the application process as simple as possible, you just need to send a short introduction to yourself and explain why you want to take this summer course.

We look forward to hearing from you!
